Campaign Finance Board Welcomes New Board Member Gregory T. Camp
04/10/2017
The New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) welcomes the appointment of new Board Member Gregory T. Camp. Camp has been appointed by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to a five-year term ending in November 2021. He succeeds Mark Piazza, whose term ended in 2016.
Camp is Managing Director of Newfield Capital Inc., a private investment firm in New York. He serves the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta as a board member and treasurer and is a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Committee on Capital Punishment.
Camp was an Assistant District Attorney in New York County for seven years, working in both the trial division and the labor racketeering and construction industry strike force. In the latter role, he investigated and prosecuted a wide range of organized crime, including extortion and bribery.
He subsequently served as Deputy Director of Criminal Justice for the State of New York, leading a statewide program promoting the prosecution of tax fraud. He has run for public office twice—for the state Assembly in 2007 and New York County District Attorney in 2009.
Camp graduated magna cum laude from Yale College and holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a JD from Yale Law School. He was born and raised in New York City, where he is now raising his three children.
“It is an honor and a privilege to receive this appointment from Speaker Mark-Viverito. I look forward to working with the CFB to serve the people of New York City and to using my experience as a candidate for public office and as a prosecutor to inform my work as a member of the Campaign Finance Board,” said Board Member Gregory Camp.
Board Chair Frederick Schaffer said, “I welcome Mr. Camp to the CFB and look forward to working with him. His clear commitment to public service and his experience both as a candidate and as a prosecutor working to protect the public from corruption will add a valuable perspective to the Board’s work in the coming years.”
“The Campaign Finance Board’s mission is to reduce the possibility or appearance of corruption and to empower New Yorkers to get involved in city elections, both as voters and as candidates. Mr. Camp brings significant experience in both areas to the Board, which will help us fulfill that dual mission. I look forward to working with him to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability in New York City’s elections,” said Executive Director Amy Loprest.
As mandated by the City Charter and the New York City Campaign Finance Act, the CFB is composed of five board members: two are appointed by the mayor, two are appointed by by the speaker of the City Council, and the chair is appointed by the mayor after consultation with the speaker. The Board is strictly nonpartisan, and the mayor’s and the speaker’s two appointees must not be affiliated with the same political party. Board members serve staggered five-year terms.
