1. What is the most important issue in Council District 7 you would address if elected?

I have consistently maintained that the safety and well being of my constituents is my number one priority. In the current economic environment, our greatest challenge is to preserve basic services. I advocate for public funds to be spent on senior services, housing support, healthcare and education. My budget recommendations always include support for neighborhood based activities that will encourage the development of true community bonds - the ties that can hold us together and make our streets safe and familiar. It is often said that New York is a series of neighborhoods and I think that is essential to our ability to live together in harmony.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

I am the lead sponsor of the Small Business Survival Act that will establish an arbitration process for commercial tenants in good standing who face exorbitant rent increases. I am passionate about education, both on the basis of my own life experience and as a matter of social justice.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

I offer the electorate a solid and progressive record on a full spectrum of issues. My accomplishments include expanding the role for Minority & Women Owned Business Enterprises in the city contracts bidding process and passage of the Equal Benefits bill. I have taken on leadership roles in the Council that benefit my constituents: I serve as the Co-Chair of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus of the Council. Also I am a member of the Council's budget negotiating team that sets the Council's priorities and represents the Council as it debates the budget with a similar team from the Mayor's office. I take very seriously my obligation to represent the residents of Council District 7 and consider it both an honor and obligation to do so. My energy and enthusiasm for this task remain high.
