I believe community service is a calling that begins with listening to people—their wants, needs, and challenges, the stories of their lives. I’ve served this district as a community advocate for 20+ years, and have been blessed with a reputation of a person that people can turn to, especially during the COVID crisis.

Whether it’s from a predatory landlord, missed benefit payments, an overcrowded school, a pending eviction proceeding, criminal justice and police reforms, getting a pot hole fixed, joblessness, or being able to enjoy Highland Park, I am honored to have served the community. It all starts with listening.

Now I’m running to represent you on the NY City Council, and my first commitment is to listen to your concerns. I’m not an independent voice, I am YOUR voice on the council, unlike other candidates that are deeply compromised by the agendas of special interest groups. No one will be denied a seat at my table to plan the future of the district, provided that there's a commitment to meeting YOUR needs, not my own. This is how together we'll put community first.

On November 3, 2020 I need your vote to empower me as YOUR voice on the City Council, to fight for our fair share of resources from the city, to protect our community from further gentrification, to fight for criminal justice reform, to protect small businesses, and put forth an economic development plan that puts community first.

My name is Darma Diaz and I’m looking forward to serving you as your City Council representative. Thank you.

Candidate Statement

I’m Darma Diaz and I’m running for City Council in the 37th District. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, growing up in Bushwick and now living in Cypress-Hills East New York. These neighborhoods made me who I am today, which is why I’ve spent my life fighting to improve them. I’ve worked hard to secure new affordable housing, combat homelessness, build new schools, and ensure that our youth, families, and seniors have access to the resources they need. In the City Council, I’ll hit the ground running and continue that fight to bring back the desperately needed resources that our community needs. We face difficult times in the weeks and months ahead, but working together we will overcome and our community will recover.
