1. What is the most important issue in Council District 38 you would address if elected?

Affordable housing is an issue of paramount concern in our community. I’ve been successful in negotiating with the mayor’s office, in cooperation with the Speaker, and other colleagues, to secure a commitment from the Department of Housing Preservation & Development to earmark $6 million in affordable housing construction over the next 5 years. This is a great beginning and we will continue to do more.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

Health, Education, Environmental Justice and Jobs are other important issues within our community. I have secured funds for the construction of the first ever High School in our district. Our children will not have to travel out of the District to get to school. We must continue to develop programs such as the Beacon program within our schools that fosters multicultural harmony at a young age. I allocated capital dollars for Senior Centers.

We must safeguard our health and environment by remaining vigilant on issues such as solid waste transfer and power plant placement within residential areas, we cannot allow our community to become overburdened.

We are experiencing an unemployment crisis, I am vigorously promoting job development of both entry level and managerial training. I am fostering local employment by attracting new business to our area and working on safeguards to keep businesses from leaving.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

My experience on the NYC Council will help me to continue to help the community that I love and call home. On the Council I’ve secured construction funding of the first High School in our district, brought new business and jobs to our area, fought against power plant placement in residential areas, voted for responsible handling of solid waste, secured affordable housing, created programs to foster harmony between our youngsters. I’ve met with Police Commissioner Kelly and held sensitivity training and role playing workshops between the police and teens to improve police/community relations. It’s just the beginning, there is more to do, I want to remain part of this process.
