I was born raised
and educated in Birmingham, Alabama and participated
in the Civil Right Movement during the 1960’s &
’70’s. I believe and live by the attitudes and values
that were central to my upbringing in my Southern
Christian home. I am the father of five daughters.
Willie Walker, the former Chairperson of Community
Board #10 has had many accomplishments. Some of
the many things he has achieved are the following:
- He worked with the Deans of Harlem and Presbyterian
Hospital’s Dental Schools to get the first
free dental care for grade schools in Central
Harlem.
- When the Board of Education built a school
on 140th Street, an area that was contaminated
with pert ethylene (a cancer-causing toxin),
he fought the Board of Education and the school
did not open.
- Mr. Walker worked with residents in River
Bend housing when the Department of Transportation
(DOT) was doing construction around the clock
on the Harlem River Drive. He successfully
worked jointly with residents and community
leaders to advocate with DOT to stop work at
a reasonable hour.
- Mr. Walker understands that environmental
issues extend well beyond pollution. Environmental
racism can and has affected our health, welfare,
housing and community development. He is
developing a comprehensive approach to these
issues.
- Mr. Walker is a committee member to The
Partnership to End Violence against Women.
- When the MTA wanted to close 116th Street
station for a year, he successfully fought
to keep the station open.
- The new redevelopment in the 9th district
has priced out the long-term residents of our
community. Equitable distribution of low and
middle-income housing, as well as home ownership,
will be a priority for Willie Walker. As city
Councilman, Willie Walker will see to it that
site control is given to community-based organizations
to rehab low and middle-income housing along
with co-ops and condos.
