1. What is the most important issue in Council District 18 you would address if elected? The 18th District has long been a dumping ground for pollution, particularly along the waterfront. While City Hall has lavished money on waterfront areas in Manhattan to create healthy environments for the wealthy, our waterfront has languished as polluted brownfields which have gotten neither money nor attention from City Hall for decades. Our neighborhoods were supposed to get substantial funds for environmental clean-up and new parks from the Croton Filtration Project fund, but nothing has happened. Unless action is taken, our community could lose this money. I want to make sure contaminated areas are cleaned up for the health of this community, which has one of the highest asthma and childhood obesity rates in both the city and the nation.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected? I would push for school construction to expand classroom space with more community based decision-making at the Dept. of Ed. I will fight to prevent closures of senior centers, firehouses and the reduction of needed services. I also support the creation of a neighborhood mediation and arbitration center to deal with community and family conflicts, such as domestic abuse, bias-related incidents, and disputes between uniformed services and community residents. This district also needs a comprehensive land use plan to create a vision for how this area can develop sustainably and responsibly over the next several decades. I also support increasing medical screenings and preventive medicine to increase the health of the community.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office? Too often City Council Members fail to address the needs of all district residents. I will make myself available to everyone, and do my best to listen and respond to your concerns because they matter to me as a lifelong resident of this district.
