1. What is the most important issue in Council District 11 you would address if elected?

The most important issue in Council District 11 is the protection of the environment, including rezoning to prevent overdevelopment. Under my leadership, the Council voted unanimously for rezoning in Riverdale and Kingsbridge. I successfully advocated for the passage of new SNAD (Special Natural Area District) regulations to protect natural features in the community. I am a leader in fighting the city’s construction of a water filtration plant in Van Cortlandt Park because of its negative impact on the community. If re-elected, I will continue to fight for measures to protect the character and attractiveness of the neighborhood and other issues that affect the environment, such as noise control, clean air and funding of mass transit. My membership on the Environmental Protection Committee and my 100% rating from the League of Conservation Voters two years running is indicative of my commitment to this issue.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

A matter of great importance to everyone in the city is education, which has consistently been a major priority of mine. As President of Community School Board 10, I was instrumental in having two new middle school/high schools built in my district. I have obtained funds for virtually every school in my district, as well as for a new library in the community. As a member of the Education Committee, I have acted to pass laws in the City Council to protect the health and safety of students and to prevent bullying. If re-elected, I will continue to work for our children and our schools.

Other issues that I will continue to fight for are tenant protections and affordable housing.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

As a life long resident of my district, I am in touch with, and sensitive to, the needs of my constituents. I have represented the area, as a State Assemblyman and member of the City Council, for over twenty-five years, helping thousands of constituents and solving hundreds of neighborhood problems. I bring dedication, experience, and leadership to the position, and I pledge to continue to utilize these qualities for the benefit of my community and all New Yorkers.
