1. What is the most important issue in Council District 2 you would address if elected?

District 2 is experiencing dramatic overdevelopment. Expensive housing, massive community facilities and commercial developments are changing the character of our neighborhoods and straining our public transit systems, parks and schools. Community-based planning must be instituted to give residents more control. Zoning laws must be changed to require affordable housing and modify the provisions that allow oversized community facilities (i.e. hospitals/universities). Scarce affordable housing must be preserved by strengthening rent laws and renewing expiring subsidies.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

Education Many schools are not providing quality education. We need our fair share of funding from Albany and the City to provide smaller classes and after-school programs that will allow all children to succeed. Teacher salaries must be sufficient to keep the best educators in our schools.

Quiet Enjoyment Our community is characterized by lively bars and restaurants, but lack of planning has sometimes lead to excessive noise and traffic problems. Uncontrolled outdoor cafes and backyard gardens, can make it difficult for nearby residents to quietly enjoy their homes and sidewalks. We must have local control over these establishments and improve enforcement of noise and nuisance ordinances.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

I have been an advocate for more than 20 years. As Chief of Staff of the current Councilmember, I built a record on issues affecting residents in all parts of the district. As District Leader and community activist I have advocated for housing, community gardens, corporate responsibility, fair wages and better schools. My record has been recognized by the over 25 endorsements from elected officials, unions, political organizations and community leaders.
