1. What is the most important issue in Council District 1 you would address if elected?

Lower Manhattan redevelopment and revitalization, environmental safeguards against dust, noise, and toxins, preserving and creating affordable housing, including housing for seniors, support for culture and arts organizations, creation of a Lower Manhattan waterfront park on the east and west sides, completely reopening Park Row to all traffic, support small business development, full funding of schools and libraries, support for programs and centers for seniors and young people.

 

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

A community of livability, affordability, and opportunity including: implementing the right of first refusal for rental tenants in Section 8 and Mitchell Lama buildings to purchase their units with the assistance of an affordable housing trust fund, expanding restrictions on diesel and other toxic emissions, implementing a building code that addresses high rise building safety and fuel storage, providing needed assistance to homeless, especially homeless young people, reducing class size, funding senior centers so they can provide services five days a week.

 

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

I have a proven track record and I’ve been an effective leader in addressing local community concerns and quality of life issues, made improvements in our district schools, created and funded the Space Science Center in one of our local schools, addressed zoning needs, worked to protect arts and cultural groups including loft living for artists, made traffic improvements on the Canal Street corridor, and protected the rights of all people including immigrants, and members of the LGBT community.
