NYC Voter Assistance Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for May 7th
05/02/2025
May 2, 2025 — The NYC Campaign Finance Board’s Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC) will hold it's second meeting of the new year on Wednesday, May 7th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. ET. The meeting will focus on what New Yorkers need to know about Ranked Choice Voting before the June Primary Election, including a presentation from our Associate Director of Partnerships, Gauree Patel, on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV).
The VAAC will also hear from a panel of community leaders from across the city on their work educating their communities about RCV– what works, challenges they face, and the potential benefits and potential limitations of the voting model in making the city’s democracy more open, equitable, and representative. This panel discussion will highlight perspectives from a diverse group of advocates, including Karen Wharton, Democracy Coalition Coordinator at Citizen Action Network of New York; Joan Alexander-Bakiriddin, President of NAACP's Brooklyn Branch; and Orlando Ovalles, Northeast Director of Civic Engagement at the NALEO Educational Fund.
This will be a virtual event conducted remotely via Zoom. Members of the public are encouraged to register in advance.
The following services will be provided for this meeting: American Sign Language interpretation, CART transcription, and Spanish-language interpretation. Please email press@nyccfb.info before close of business Tuesday, May 6th if you require additional interpreting services.
The Voter Assistance Advisory Committee consists of nine members who advise the Campaign Finance Board and its nonpartisan voter engagement initiative, NYC Votes. In addition to hosting post-election hearings, the committee recommends legislative and administrative changes to improve elections in New York City.
NYC Votes is the nonpartisan voter engagement initiative of the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) and its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). In addition to promoting voter registration, participation, and civic engagement in New York City through its many programs and partnerships, NYC Votes sponsors the city’s official Debate Program and produces the citywide Voter Guide.
