1989-43: Participating Candidates' Contributions to Own Campaign Cannot Exceed Contribution Limit and May Qualify as Threshold/Matchable Contributions

September 11, 1989

An opinion has been requested whether a candidate may make contributions to his or her own campaign which qualify as threshold or matchable contributions.

The New York City Campaign Finance Act (Administrative Code §3-701, et seq.) permits participating candidates to make contributions to their own campaigns, provided that those contributions do not exceed the applicable contribution limit. Administrative Code §3-703(1) (h). Thus, a monetary contribution by a candidate to his or her own campaign may qualify as a threshold or matchable contribution pursuant to Administrative Code §3-702(2), (3).
